BIFL: Buy well. Keep it.
BIFL stands for "Buy It For Life." It describes products chosen for long-term durability, repairability and value instead of products that need to be replaced every few years.
Cast iron, Goodyear-welted boots, a field watch, waxed canvas — classic BIFL.

01 — BIFL meaning
It's a question, not a promise.
BIFL stands for Buy It For Life. A BIFL product doesn't have to literally last forever. It has to be well made, maintainable and repairable — so it stays useful far longer than the typical alternative. The mindset shift is simple:
Which version will still be useful in twenty years?
That changes what matters. Price still counts — but so do construction, materials, repairability, replacement parts, warranty support and how a product performs after years of real ownership.
02 — Our criteria
Six things we check.
No single rule makes something BIFL. A long warranty alone doesn't make a product durable, and a high price doesn't make it well made.
Durability
Materials and construction that survive daily use: steel over brittle plastic, solid wood over particleboard, stitched over glued.
Repairability
Opens with ordinary tools. Common failure points can be fixed rather than forcing a full replacement.
Replacement parts
Seals, soles, blades, motors and hardware are sold by the maker or third parties — ideally for years.
Warranty
Coverage that is specific, honoured and transferable. We read the terms, not the word “lifetime.”
Maker support
A company with a track record of standing behind old products, not just new sales.
Owner evidence
Repeated reports from people who have used the product for 5, 10 or 20+ years. This weighs most.
03 — Common confusion
What BIFL is not.
Repairable
Boots get resoled. Zippers get replaced. Appliances need new seals. Repairable beats indestructible.
Well made
Price can be branding. Ask: why should this one last longer? There should be a concrete answer.
Supported
A warranty helps, but parts availability and simple repairs matter more over decades.
Red Flags
Sealed battery that can't be replaced
Glued soles, glued seams, bonded leather
Proprietary screws and no service manual
“Lifetime” warranty with vague terms
Annual redesigns, no spare parts for old models
Reviews written in the first week of ownership
Green flags
Standard fasteners and published parts lists
Goodyear-welted or stitched construction
Full-grain leather, cast iron, stainless steel
Same core design sold for 10+ years
Repair centres or resoling services available
Owners reporting 10, 20, 40 years of use
04 — Is BIFL worth it?
Cheap is expensive.
Measure cost per year of use, not the price tag. An illustrative example with work boots:
Figures are illustrative. Longer ownership also means less waste — the most sustainable product is the one you don't replace.

07 — BIFL brands
Names owners trust.
Brands that appear most often in our library. A brand name is a starting point — we rank individual products, because quality can vary across a range.
08 — How to choose
Six questions before you buy.
09 — Make it last
Buying is half of it.
Even the best product needs basic care. A few minutes of maintenance is what turns a durable product into a lifetime product.
Cast iron & carbon steel
Dry immediately, wipe with a thin layer of oil. Re-season if rust appears — it's fully reversible.
Leather boots & belts
Brush off dirt, condition every few months, and resole before the welt is damaged.
Appliances
Clean filters and seals regularly. Replace worn belts and gaskets early instead of running them to failure.
Tools
Keep dry, oil moving parts, sharpen edges. Replace handles rather than heads.
Bags & outerwear
Re-wax waxed canvas yearly, lubricate zippers, repair small tears before they spread.
Electronics
Choose replaceable batteries, avoid full discharge cycles, keep firmware updated.
